A Clock is a device which shows Time. It essentially consists of two hands — an hour hand and a minute hand. The minute hand is longer than the hour hand. For simplicity, we will not consider the third hand — the second hand which is also present in many clocks and watches. Conventionally clocks are circular in shape but we can now find them in other different shapes too. Irrespective of the shape of the dial of the clock, the tips of their hands — hour as well as minute—describe a circular path. The circumference of this circular path is divided into 12 equal parts, called Hour spaces. Each hour space is farther divided into 5 equal parts called Minute spaces. Thus the complete circumference is divided into 12 x 5 = 60 equal minute spaces.

We know that 1 hour equals 60 minutes. Therefore, the time taken by the hour-hand to move one hour-space (or 5 minute-spaces) equals the time taken by the minute-hand to move 60 minute-spaces (or 12 hour-spaces) which is equivalent to covering the complete circumference. In other words, while the hour-hand moves one hour-space, the minute-hand goes one full circle.
From the above description we notice that in 1 hour (or 60 minutes), the minute-hand passes 60 minute-spaces while the hour-hand moves 5 minute-spaces. Thus, we may conclude that in 1 hour or 60 minutes, the minute-hand gains (60 - 5) = 55 minute-spaces (or minutes) over the hour-hand. This is a very important and useful conclusion and therefore, must be always remembered while solving problems on clock.

Clearly, when money is borrowed on simple interest then the interest is calculated uniformly on the original principal throughout the loan period.
However, in post offices, banks, insurance corporations and the other money lending and deposit taking companies, the method of calculating interest is quite different.
Under this method, the borrower and the lender agree to fix up a certain unit of-time say yearly or half-yearly or quarterly, to settle the previous account.
In such cases, the interest accured during the  first unit of time is added to the original principal and the amount so obtained is taken as the Principal for the second unit of time.' The Amount of this Principal at the end of second unit of time becomes the Principal for the third unit of time and so on.
After a certain specified period, the difference between the Amount and the money borrowed is called (he Compound Interest (C.I.) for that period. ,

    Partnership is a form of association of two or more persons who contribute their resources like money in order to carry on a certain business together. It may be of simple or compound type.
    Simple Partnership is one in which the capitals of the partners are invested for the same time. The profits or losses are divided among the partners in the ratio of their investments.
    Compound Partnership is one in which the capitals of the partners are invested for different periods. In such cases equivalent capitals are calculated for a unit time by multiplying the capital with the number of units of time. The profits or losses are then divided in the ratio of these equivalent capitals. Thus the ratio of profits is directly proportional to both capital invested as well as time.
    A partner who participates in the working and manages the business is called a Working Partner while the one who only-invests capital but does not participate in the working of the business is called a Sleeping Partner. A working partner gets either monthly payment or a part of the profit for his contribution in the management of the business. This payment is deducted from the total profit before its distribution.
    It is advisable to do thoroughly the chapter on “Ratio and Proportion” as its concept will be used extensively in this chapter.

    Pipes and Cistern problems usually consist of a cistern or tank to which one or more pipes are connected to fill or/ and empty it. These are similar to Time and Work problems. Here work done is filling/emptying the cistern or tank. And, this work is done by pipes-connected to the tank in place of persons doing the work. The only difference lies in the fact that here work can be positive (filling the tank) as well as negative (emptying the tank) whereas in Time and Work problems, the work done is always positive.
    A pipe connected to the tank which fills it is called an Inlet. If the pipe connected to the tank empties it, it is called an Outlet or exit pipe

    A consumer goes to the market and buys certain goods. The buyer is called a customer and the shopkeeper who sells the goods to him is called a retailer. The retailer in turn purchases goods in bulk from a wholesaler who keeps a largo stock of goods. In the retailer-wholesaler deal, the retailer becomes the customer.
    Cost Price (C.P.): The price at which a person buys an article is called the Cost Price (C.P.) of the article.
    Selling Price (S.P.): The price at which an article is sold “is called the Selling Price (SP) of the article. Whenever there is a transaction between the two parties i.e.the buyer and the seller, the price at which the article is sold by the seller is same as the price at which it is purchased by the buyer. Normally, the Cost iPrice and the Selling Price in a problem are commonly used in a slightly modified sense. This is clarified by the following illustration.
    A sells an article to B at price Rs.x, B in turn sells it to C at price Rs. y. Here, Rs. x is the Selling Price for A as well as the Cost Price for B. But the Selling Price for B is Rs. y which is also the, Cost Price for C.
    Profit or Gain : Whenever a person sells an article at price greater than the Cost Price he is said to have made a profit or gain.
    Profit or Gain = SP-CP.
    • In the above example B’s profit= Rs. y - Rs. x
    Loss: When S.P. is less than the C.P., one makes a loss. Loss = C.P.-S.P.
    In the above example B's loss= Rs. x - Rs. y.
    Note: S.P. and C.P. must be for the same article and for the same quantity and also must be referred to the same person while calculating profit or loss. . .
    For example, we can’t take the difference of the Price of table and chair; or difference of Cost Price of 10 kg's of Sugar and Selling Price of 2 kgs of Sugar for calculating profit or loss. Further, if we are calculating B's profit or loss, then B's C.P. and S.P. should be used and not A's or C’s.
    Note: Profit or Loss are always reckoned on Cost Price Gain per cent or % gain is gain on the reference value & Rs. 100.
    Loss per cent or % loss is loss on the reference value & Rs. 100.
    Some important formula
    Gain = S.P.-CP. .
    Loss = C.P.-S.P.
